John 13:34
34 I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another.
Reflection
A friend has a post on Facebook that says:
Normalize telling your friends you love them.
Tell them a lot.
Make it weird.
The post resulted in a lot of responses, which was great. I wonder how many people actually TOLD one another in words, face-to-face.
We often talk about showing our love, which is so important. How we treat one another, the ways we live in relationship, the ways we reach out and actively live our love are all so important. I always think of it as “making love real” and living out Jesus’ commandment to love one another.
And yet, this Facebook post reminds us of the importance of TELLING one another we love them – of using the words. Perhaps it is a special person in your life, a child or sibling, a parent, a friend. Tell them. And as important as action is, use words this time. It might feel awkward. They may tell you you’re weird. OR…it might be just what you need to say and the most important thing they hear today.
Prayer
God, you have gifted us with love. Help us to not only share that love with others but to speak words of love to them. I love you God. Help me to tell others I love them too. Amen.
