Reflection
A friend of mine is writing a sermon. Her minister is retiring and she was asked to preach on June 7th, however due to COVID-19 her sermon will be e-mailed out to her congregation. This week she sent it to me for some feedback.
Her sermon is on singing, which we both found pretty ironic considering how it has been on her heart and on mine in recent weeks. In her sermon she presented something that I had never thought of and I can’t get the image out of my head, so I thought I’d share it with you. She reflected, “I wonder if Jesus’ life changed with music. I wonder if he sang to familiar songs as he walked so many miles.”
I confess, I’m not sure if I have ever thought about Jesus singing. Yes, he knew his scripture and would have known the Psalms. I’ve imagined him praying and reciting the psalms. If I thought really hard about it, I think I’ve also imagined him singing in the temple or in worship of God.
But never before did I image him walking down the road singing, or even humming. The picture brings the biggest smile to my face and to my heart. Somehow imaging Jesus singing makes him more “real” to me – and I can’t explain why. It is just this overwhelming comforting feeling as I picture Jesus, walking along with a song in his heart and on his lips.
Then it takes me even further….WHAT did he sing?
When he was on the road to Emmaus before meeting up with the disciples after his resurrection, what did he sing?
When he was in the garden the night before his death, and he knew that his disciples had fallen asleep, what did he sing?
When he witnessed the Woman of Samaria joyfully head back to her town to tell others she had been seen, what did he sing?
When he looked out over all of the lost and hurting people before he began his Sermon on the Mount, what song was going through his heart?
So, now I’m intrigued and this is an image I’m inviting you to explore with me. If you, too, can imagine Jesus singing, is there a familiar song that you can imagine him singing? When can you picture him singing it? Why do you think he would sing that particular song?
What song would Jesus sing today, in the midst of COVID-19?

Prayer
God, Jesus is revealed to us in so many ways and there is always so much more to learn about him and from him. Open my eyes to see Jesus. Help me to grow in my knowledge of him and in my relationship with him, so that I might reflect his life and his teachings. Amen.
